The North Jakarta District Court found Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama guilty of blasphemy against Islam and sentenced him to two years in prison on Tuesday morning (09/05), despite the prosecutors' recommended sentence of two years' probation on a lesser charge.

The governor said immediately after his sentence was handed down that he will appeal the guilty verdict.

He was immediately taken in a "Barracuda," a police armored vehicle, to begin his sentence at Cipinang Prison in East Jakarta.

Around 300 of his supporters greeted him at the prison. They have planned a series of events on Tuesday and Wednesday to protest the verdict against the Chinese Christian governor.
