Instrumenta 2018: Sandbox International Media Art Festival
The Instrumenta 2018: Sandbox International Media Art Festival opened at the National Gallery in Central Jakarta on Monday.
Indonesia's first multimedia art festival is an initiative by the Ministry of Education and Culture to provide a broad space for the development of this artform in the country.
Besides artists, the exhibition also involves game designers, musicians, photographers and researchers from Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, China and New Zealand.
Visitors can directly interact with 29 art installations that incorporate virtual reality technology, digital games, arcade games, the internet and artificial intelligence.
Bob Edrian, who is one of the curators, said the festival was a melting pot for people outside the art genre, such as game designers and game developers, who are often excluded from more conventional art exhibitions. They are now enriching the exhibition and providing visitors with the ability to explore media art through interaction, participation and collaboration.
The event ends on Nov. 29.
