Institut Francais d'Indonésie, in collaboration with Komunitas Salihara, staged "Sprint," a contemporary dance performance choreographed by Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh at the Salihara Cultural Center in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, this week.

"Sprint" debuted in 2013 and it has been performed in New York and Beijing before coming to Indonesia.

The solo dance was performed by Vo-Dinh's long-time collaborator, Maeva Cunci.

Composed entirely of running in eight sets of steps, the dance explores transformations of the body and symbolizes the continuous process of reinventing oneself. The dancer, or in this case runner, goes through exhaustion many times, resulting in various physical states and culminating in rebirth.

The sound of her heels against the floor, coupled with the rhythm of her breath, serves as the music.

Vo-Dinh is the artistic director of Le Phare at the Centre Chorégraphique National du Havre Haute-Normandie in France. Her works often depict social, physiological and psychological issues.

She received the Prix d'Auteur Rencontres Choregraphiques Internationales de Bagnolet award in 2001.

On the other hand, Cunci has collaborated with Vo-Dinh for 14 years. Cunci is also a member of burlesque musical group Les Vraoums.

"Sprint" is part of Salihara's "Helatari" dance festival. More information on the festival is available on Salihara's official website.
