The Indonesian chapter of the World Wildlife Fund is helping independent farmers in Binjai subdistrict in Sintang district, West Kalimantan, to reduce deforestation and habitat loss, widely blamed on the palm oil industry, by introducing more sustainable farming practices and alternatives to slash-and-burn land clearing methods.

The Jakarta Globe attended a workshop in November where the WWF taught farmers how to increase their yields without clearing trees by using certified seeds, precisely measuring fertilizers and implementing good farming practices.
