Designer Patrick Owen Unleashes His Wild Side for Alice
Jakarta. Alice Through the Looking Glass" is probably one of the most awaited Disney movies for 2016.
The sequel to 2010's "Alice in Wonderland" features big Hollywood names like Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Mia Wasikowska. Produced by Tim Burton, the movie promises unbridled fantasy, state-of-the-art computer technology and quirky characters dear to our hearts and memories.
"The movie, which is based on Lewis Carroll's story, has been much awaited by fans around the world, as well as in Indonesia," Fitra Rifai, head of studio marketing of The Walt Disney Company Indonesia, said during a press conference in Plaza Indonesia, on Wednesday (10/08).
The new movie was released in the United States in May and will hit Indonesian screens on Friday.
To celebrate the Indonesian release, the Walt Disney Company Indonesia has collaborated with young designer Patrick Owen to re-interpret some of the costumes from the film.
"We always try to collaborate with local talents that represent our movies," Fitra said.
"And fashion is central in this movie," Fitra added. "That's why we've decided to collaborate with a local fashion designer. And we notice that Patrick Owen has the 'Alice' spirit, which is daring to dream and adventurous."
"I'm very happy to be in this project," Patrick said. "It has propelled my imaginations and unleashed my wild side."
For the collaboration, Patrick re-interprets costumes for Alice and the Mad Hatter. The designer then presented the costumes on specially designed mannequins.
As seen in the press conference, Patrick dressed Alice's mannequin in a high-necked black vest, white strapless mini-dress and double-breasted black corset. The total look is both very swank and modern.
"The costume highlights Alice's feminine side," said the designer. "And it also represents Alice's restrained background."
The Mad Hatter's mannequin, on the other hand, is dressed in a clash of comical colors.
The mannequin wears a red velvet tuxedo with ruffled cuffs made of silver tulle, a pair of loose-fitted chino shorts in khaki and a black tall hat that features a clock on the back. A sash, made of rolls of colorful threads, dangles across his chest.
"Mad Hatter is very dear to me," said Patrick. "He has both a weird and exciting personality."
Patrick and his team created these quirky costumes in only two weeks.
"It's been fun. My team and I have truly enjoyed ourselves in making the costumes."
Disney is happy with Patrick's re-interpretations of the movie's costumes.
"We're very happy with the results," said Fitra. "Patrick has successfully captured the essence of the characters in his costumes."
Disney is currently in discussions with a mall in Jakarta to showcase the mannequins while the movie is screened.
