Indonesia Fashion Week Prepares to Celebrate Local Cultures
Jakarta. Indonesia Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs Association, or APPMI, is preparing to kick off the fifth Indonesia Fashion Week next week.
The association, which fractured in November, maintains its commitment to hold IFW every year.
"There are a lot of hard works behind the glitz and glamour of IFW, but we're all committed to develop Indonesia's fashion industry through the event," said Musa Widyatmodjo, APPMI's co-founder and coordinator of IFW 2016.
Jakarta Convention Center will host the event from Thursday, March 10, until the Sunday. This year the event boasts the theme "Reflection of Culture" to explore Indonesia's rich cultures and traditions and reinterpreting and repackaging them in contemporary fashion styles.
"It is important for us to establish a distinct identity of local fashion, especially in facing the era of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) open market these days," said Poppy Dharsono, APPMI's co-founder and president of IFW 2016.
The event includes exhibitions, talking panels, workshops and 32 fashion shows. The JCC halls will be divided into 12 areas showcasing accessories, textiles and designated areas for children's, women's, men's and Muslim wear.
In total, 487 brands will be participating at the IFW.
The Ministry of Cooperatives and Small-Medium Enterprises will host a booth to feature some of the best of local small-to-medium sized enterprises.
"All their products boast local materials and detailed craftsmanship," said Ahmad Zabadi, managing director of the marketing services institution at the ministry. "We hope, by featuring them in this event, we can introduce them to wider markets, both locally and globally."
"Approximately 180 models, seven choreographers and six music directors will be involved in the fashion shows," Musa said.
Local cosmetics brand, Wardah, has been appointed the official make-up of the event. They will bring in 100 make-up artists for IFW 2016.
Designers from Malaysia, Japan, Italy and Australia will all showcase collections.
"There's a lot that we all can learn from [international designers]," said Musa. "We can learn how they cultivate and explore their cultures, re-interpret and re-package them for global fashion markets."
It is estimated that 120,000 people will crowd JCC during the four-day event. The amount of transactions during IFW 2016 is expected to be around Rp 86 billion ($65 million).
Entry to event is Rp 25,000 per person. For further information and schedules visit indonesiafashionweek.id.
