Jakarta. Film director Hanung Bramantyo is building a new studio in Gamplong, a so-called "tourist village" near Sleman in Yogyakarta, as part of the Wonderful Indonesia brand campaign.

"They are building many facilities [for the studio], including a joglo (traditional Javanese pavilion) and another building that blends in with nature here," village head Sigit said in a statement on Saturday (18/11).

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the studio, built as it is by one of Indonesia's most famous directors, will be a strong endorsement for the tourist village.

The studio is expected to start operating in 2018.

Gamplong, located 20 kilometers from Yogyakarta, is known for its handicrafts, including bags, baskets, wallets, tissue boxes, necklaces and curtains made of woven fabric and other natural materials.

Sales of handicraft contribute up to Rp 310 million ($23,000) per month to the village economy.

The village also offers holiday packages for students to learn how to weave or make photo frames and pencil cases.
