Jakarta's Museum MACAN to Host Dedicated Art Space for Children
Jakarta. Jakarta's Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nusantara, or MACAN, will host a dedicated art space for youngsters in a mission to bring together the world of art and education through a series of commissions or projects.
Each project will encourage children to visualize the world of art and explore ways of responding or expressing themselves through art.
"Education is a core mission of Museum MACAN. The museum offers a variety of programs that cater to the different needs of our visitors. These programs relate to the artworks on view and change regularly [...] Partnering with local schools, we provide educational resource materials for teachers and educators to help them engage their students with art beyond the walls of our museum," Museum MACAN director Aaron Seeto said.
The art space's inaugural exhibition will be titled "Floating Garden" and will be presented by the celebrated Indonesian artist, Entang Wiharso.
This exhibition will incorporate artwork, murals and educational activities that explore ideas of floating gardens – a concept of land and nature based on the artist’s unique artwork style and vision.
"In an effort to produce more, we often fail to realize the disruption we make to the environment around us," said Entang, whose current artistic vision revolves around ideas of land, environmental degradation and food production.
"In a production-focused culture, we are conditioned to manipulate what is around us to maximize production. Land becomes scarce. We become surrounded by less greenery and the environment is changed in order to accommodate human demands. It is up to the young minds of the world to make a difference."
Through "Floating Garden," Entang invites children to think about nature as a part of their everyday life.
He wants children to create their own interpretation of works inspired by his detailed, imaginative drawings in the hopes that they will learn about the importance of nature and be able to observe and identify the techniques and styles that can be found within his work.
