Jakarta. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs held an event in Jakarta on Tuesday (11/04) to promote Riau Islands province as a foreign investment destination.
The "Update From the Region" event, which took place at the ministry's headquarters in Central Jakarta in cooperation with the Riau Islands provincial government, was held to promote the province's economic potential.
The ministry invited representatives from 16 countries and business leaders from various sectors to join various panel discussions and activities that included seminars and exhibitions to encourage them to invest and grow business activities in the province.
Riau Islands Governor Nurdin Basirun, who was present at the event, said the province is strategically located in the busy Malacca Strait and that it borders Malaysia and Singapore.
Nurdin said he invited ambassadors from neighboring countries to visit the province to see for themselves the economic potential in the Riau Islands.
However, he also pointed out that the central government still needs to find ways to make the investment process easier.
Deputy Foreign Minister A.M. Fachir said the government is working on plans to market Riau Islands province as part of various sectoral packages.
For example, the province's marine and fishing industries have notable potential but both sectors need to be explored further to make room for more economic growth.
"As an archipelagic province, Riau Islands offers attractive facilities for the tourism industry, trade and investment. The government is committed to facilitating investments and provide ease of access for businesses," Fachir told reporters on the sidelines of the event.
