Indonesian Police Peacekeeping Unit Returns Home After Detention in Sudan
Jakarta. Members of Indonesia's Formed Police Unit, or FPU VIII, returned home from Sudan on Sunday morning (05/03) after they had been detained in Al Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, for allegedly attempting to smuggle a large amount of weapons and ammunition.
The Indonesian police peacekeeping unit was originally scheduled to return on Jan. 21.
The National Police and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs formed a team with the United Nations Missions in Darfur (Unamid) to investigate the case.
As the investigation did not show evidence of the FPU VIII members doing what they had been accused of, the Sudanese government allowed the police to return to Indonesia.
According to the National Police Commission's statement, FPU VIII was falsely accused. The commission added that FPU VIII was recognized by the UN as the best Unamid contingent.
