The National Monument complex may soon be home to an underground parking lot connected to the planned mass rapid transit system as part of a Jakarta administration proposal to overcome the chronic parking shortage at the Central Jakarta park.

Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama said that this year the administration will formulate details of the lot design while construction will commence in 2014.

Basuki said the parking lot will be linked to the planned MRT station at the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, more than a kilometer south from the complex known as Monas. “We can build a massive underground shopping complex [between the parking lot and the station],” he said.

Construction for the MRT started on Friday with the first phase linking the HI traffic circle to Lebak Bulus, South Jakarta, via an 11-kilometer route.
