No Democracy Without Political Parties : Fadli
Jakarta. House of Representatives deputy speaker Fadli Zon on Thursday (10/03) underlined that democracy – wherever it is in the world – will always be related to political parties, making it impossible to justify the moves of running for any election without the backing of such an institution.
"The issue of moving out from [or eliminating] political parties is totally wrong. There is no democracy without political parties. […] It applies everywhere in the world,” Fadli said at the Parliamentary Complex, South Jakarta.
According to Fadli, political parties are the ones in need of improvement if they have made mistakes or wrongdoings.
“Those mentioning the void of political parties do not understand democracy. It will lead to authoritarianism and totalitarianism,” Fadli said, adding that these two forms of government will develop without any authority from the most important element of democracy: political parties.
These parties represent the organization to recruit people to represent the public, he said.
However, the Gerindra politician mentioned that everyone has the right to run as a gubernatorial, mayoral and presidential candidate, as long as there is no intention of eliminating political parties.
“If they want to compete independently, they are allowed by our constitution,” Fadli concluded.
