North Jakarta Neighborhood Leader Namedrops Police to Collect Money
Jakarta. A letter asking for a "security fee" to be paid to police and military officers to guard the Gading Kirana real estate in North Jakarta during the anti-Ahok protests planned on Nov. 25 and Dec. 2 has led to a neighborhood watch leader who circulates the letter being interrogated by the police.
The Kelapa Gading Barat neighborhood watch leader, W.J.M. Sutjipto, was questioned at the North Jakarta Police headquarters on Wednesday (23/11) for reportedly name-dropping the police and defaming the institution.
"We questioned [Sutjipto] this morning in relations to a letter asking for donations to police officers that had gone viral on social media," North Jakarta Police spokesman Comr. H.M. Sungkono said.
In the letter, Sutjipto said the North Jakarta Police and Kelapa Gading Police Precinct had been notified of the donation request.
Gading Kirana residents were shocked when they were asked to donate at least Rp 200,000 ($15) each to pay a total of Rp 120 million to police and military officers who, the letter claimed, will secure the area ahead of the planned anti-Ahok protests on Nov. 25 and Dec. 2.
The letter said that 20 Mobile Brigade (Brimob) police officers from West Kalimantan and six soldiers will be put on standby at the location from Nov. 17 to Dec. 5.
