Jakarta. A five-year-old girl fell to her death from the 38th floor of a Central Jakarta apartment on Monday after she was left unattended by her domestic worker mother, police said.

The incident occurred at 1.30 p.m. at the Sudirman Park apartment complex, Tanah Abang Police Chief Comr. Mustakim said.

The girl has been identified as Sherly, the daughter of Ririn Fitri Indriyani, 26, who worked as a maid at an apartment unit belonging to a Nigerian national.

“Ririn decided to take her daughter to work,” Mustakim said. The apartment's owner was away at the time and the child was sleeping alone.

Mustakim said that at 12.45 p.m. Ririn got a WhatsApp message from her employer, who wasn't aware that Ririn's daughter was at the apartment with her, asking her pick up the employer's child, who was waiting in the lobby after returning home from school.

Because her daughter was sleeping alone in the room, Ririn decided to make a quick run downstairs to pick up her employer's child.

Mustakim said Ririn locked the apartment unit but was not aware that the balcony door was unlocked.

As she made her way down to the lobby, Ririn's daughter had fallen to her death.

“We have taken the victim's body to the RSCM for examination,” the police officer said, referring to the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Salemba, Central Jakarta.

“We will conduct further investigation related this incident.”
