Gas Station Caught Red-Handed Tampering With Their Meters
Jakarta. Five people have been arrested for allegedly tampering with the gas pump meters at a Pertamina filling station in Rempoa, south of Jakarta.
Police raided the gas station after receiving tip-offs that it had been cheating customers by pumping less fuel than what the customers pay for.
“These five people admitted they had tampered with the meters for over a year, dividing the profits equally between them,” Adi Vivid, Jakarta Police's Environmental Division chief said on Monday (06/06) to Kompas.com.
According to Adi, the perpetrators allegedly fixed the gas valves with an extra device which reduced gas flow, controlled through a remote control.
“We didn't expect this would happen, we are truly upset. We had been working hard to ensure all our services run smoothly, with officials keeping a close eye on the gas supply chain,” Yudi Nugraha, Pertamina West Java Communication and Relations Area Manager said on Tuesday.
Pertamina is cooperating with the police in their investigation and will help them run random checks at other gas stations.
The Rempoa Pertamina gas station sells about 17 tons of gas per day, and police are still unable to calculate how much money the alleged perpetrators had made from their covert operation.
All five suspects may face up to 5 years in prison for breaking the Consumer Protection Act.
