Jakarta Administration to Shut Down Mille's Discotheque Over Drug Abuse
Jakarta. The city administration said it will remain consistent in eradicating the distribution and consumption of illegal drugs in nightclubs, following its decision to close down a discotheque in West Jakarta.
Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama said his administration will shut down Mille's discotheque in Lokasari, West Jakarta, with a decree issued on Tuesday (11/10).
The governor said the administration recorded two incidents of drug abuse and distribution in the nightclub and that, in accordance with the law, the establishment should be shut down immediately.
"If we find any drug users in a club on more than one occasion, the place will be shut down. The management will not be allowed to open a similar business, like what happened in the case of Stadium [a nightclub that was shut down in 2014]," Ahok said.
The Jakarta administration also urged the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) to inspect entertainment establishments.
According to Ahok, the provincial administration will also subjects its own employees to drug tests. Those who test positive will be discharged immediately.
Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat expressed his support for the plan, saying that it proves the administration's seriousness in eradicating drug abuse.
"Drug abuse in Jakarta is worrying. The number of drug users has reached 350,000. We want to lower the number, especially by tightening surveillance on nightclubs," Djarot said.
