Seven Men on Drug Charges Escape From Police Custody in East Jakarta
Jakarta. Seven men on drug charges escaped from their detention at the National Police Criminal Investigation Unit’s directorate of narcotics in Cawang, East Jakarta, at around 6.30 a.m. on Tuesday (24/01).
An officer reported the men escaped from their cell by punching a hole on the bathroom’s wall with an iron bar.
"Then they climbed a 2.5 meter-tall wall to escape to the National Brain Center Hospital [next to the detention center]," police spokesman Brig. Gen. Rikwanto said.
The police have already examined the cell and seen CCTV footage of the men's escape.
Investigators now have seven teams in pursuit of each man. They have also studied the men's individual case files.
"We're trying to work out how and when they had planned this escape," Rikwanto added.
Three of the men are on drug charges related to sabu, or crystal methamphetamin: 30-year-old Azizul a.k.a. Izul, 22-year-old Ridwan R. a.k.a. Mame and 49-year-old Cai Chang a.k.a. Antoni.
The other four are on charges related to marijuana: 33-year-old Anthony a.k.a. Ridwab, 27-year-old Amiruddin a.k.a. Amir, 30-year-old Ricky Felani a.k.a. Ruslan and 34-year-old Sukma Jaya a.k.a. Jaya.
The police have also questioned the security personnel on duty during the incident and inspected other detention rooms to find spots that are easy to breach.
