Jakarta. The Justice and Human Rights Ministry has signed a deal with the Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) that will see some army officers work as prison guards in Indonesian correctional facilities.

Under a memorandum of understanding signed on Thursday, TNI officers close to retirement will be deployed to boost guard numbers in prisons, which are currently understaffed, Justice Minister Yasonna H. Laoly said.

Yasonna said the ministry would work with the TNI to select new guards, but the soldiers would not need to be trained because they are already "ready to take the duty."

TNI chief Gen. Moeldoko said the army was ready to help the ministry for as long as it was needed.

“The military officers won’t need to guard the correctional facilities anymore once the ministry gets enough officers,” Moeldoko said.
