Jakarta. Batam hosted the first otak-otak, or fish cake, festival at the Kepri Mall in Batam, Riau Islands, on Aug. 25-26.
According to a statement released on Sunday (27/08), the culinary festival included otak-otak creation and decoration competitions, which were joined by 18 hotels, eight restaurants and eight general participants.
Meanwhile, visitors were able to participate in a cellphone photography competition, with the winner taking home Rp 1 million ($75).
On the second day, there was also a fish clean-up competition for female guests.
Besides competitions, the festival also featured art performances from the Indonesian Carnival Association (Akari).
Tupa Simanjuntak, head of Regional Representative (Badan Perwakilan Daerah/BPD) Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) in Riau Islands, said the event aims to promote otak-otak to foreign and local tourists as a special culinary treat from Batam.
"For the long term, the otak-otak festival is planned to be annually held and will expand to regions outside Batam. In near future, we will also try to make otak-otak last for three to five days so it can be a food souvenir,” Tupa said.
