Philippine Beauty Queens Win 'Amazing Race Asia'

DECEMBER 16, 2016

Jakarta. Maggie Wilson-Consunji and Parul Shah, both Pinay beauty queens, won the fifth season of "The Amazing Race Asia," according to an official statement.

The duo received the grand prize of $100,000 after beating the other 10 teams in a series of challenges. A total of 12 cities from six countries were visited to complete the in challenges.

In the last quest, they successfully outran the other teams to arrive at a pit stop in Bali.

Parul expressed relief in winning because the money was intended to help nurse her father back to health.

"It was such a relief to win because the money can help my family, especially my Dad who has suffered a stroke. He taught me to never give up in life and I did this to prove that no matter what life throws at you, you never give up," Parul said.

Their victory proved somewhat unexpected as the Filipino team was originally considered underdogs. It was only in the final two legs of the race where they strengthened their position by cooperating with another Filipino team, Eric and Rona, to beat the fan favorites, Indonesia's Treasuri and Louisa.

"We played the game really well and climbed the ladder ever so slowly. We didn't want to come first in any of the legs because we didn't want to have a target on our backs. Who would have thought that two beauty queens would win! I'm pretty sure we'll be talking about this moment for decades!" Maggie said.

Virginia Lim, the show's senior vice president and head of content, production, and marketing, congratulated Maggie and Parul and considered this season's race the toughest one yet.

"All 22 competitors should be super proud of what they achieved during their journey. Their determination, camaraderie and sense of humor ensured that The Amazing Race Asia was the top program in its time slot among all English general entertainment channels in Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines," she said.

Watch a rerun of the show's finale at 5.15 p.m. on Friday (16/12) and 11.20 a.m. on Saturday on AXN (channel 51 (SD) and 332 (HD) on First Media, channel 204 (HD) on Big TV and FMX).
