Benedict Cumberbatch to Voice the Grinch in New Animated Film

APRIL 14, 2016

Jakarta. Benedict Cumberbatch is set to star in an upcoming animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss's widely beloved children's book, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

According to Entertainment Weekly, the British actor will lend his voice to the titular green-skinned creature in "The Grinch," which has been scheduled for wide theatrical release in November 2017.

Animation studio Illumination announced the news on Wednesday (13/04) at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Chris Meledandri, the film producer, described Cumberbatch as having a voice that evokes "comedic wickedness while embodying vulnerability."

Pete Candeland and Yarrow Cheney will co-direct the animation from a screenplay written by Michael LeSieur.

Cumberbatch's appearance in "The Grinch" will follow a slate of actors who have played the grouchy character in previous films, including Jim Carrey in Ron Howard's live-action adaptation in 2000.

Later this year, Cumberbatch will star in Marvel Studios' superhero flick, "Doctor Strange," due this November.
