Bintan Emerges as Popular Cross-Border Tourism Destination
Jakarta. A coordination meeting to discuss cross-border tourism was held at the ballroom at the Grand Mega Resort and Spa in Bali on Aug. 14-15.
According to a statement released by the Ministry of Tourism on Wednesday (16/08), the meeting was attended by the National Border Management Agency (BNPP), the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the Economic Ministry’s budget directorate, the Immigration Office, police representatives and tourism agencies.
During the event, Bintan Tourism Agency head Luki Zaiman Prawira delivered a presentation on the recent development in Bintan, Riau, and the region's emergence as a hotspot for cross-border tourism, especially for visitors from neighboring Malaysia and Singapore.
The presentation featured a 15-minute video displaying the region's recent Ironman race, the Bintan triathlon, the Tour de Bintan cycling tournament, Golf Asia Challenge and the Reebok Spartan Race.
World-class athletes like Formula One racer Rio Haryanto and Australian triathlon champion Courtney Ogden participated in some of the events featured, helping to draw in new investors eager to capitalize on the region's rising popularity among neighboring tourists.
"At first, we faced difficulties. However, by using clever and distinct concepts, I’m sure other regions can also make events that effectively attract tourists like those in Bintan," Luki said.
Luki said focusing on international events is crucial to developing regions for tourism.
