Celebrate in Style This Idul Fitri
Jakarta. Idul Fitri is just around the corner and you can feel the excitement almost everywhere. In Jakarta, the roads have become more congested than usual, especially around the malls.
It is a tradition in this country to celebrate Idul Fitri by donning new clothes.
Wearing new clothes signifies a fresh new beginning in life, as all our sins have been forgiven during the fasting month.
Many shopping centers and malls present fashion bazaars to attract more customers towards Idul Fitri.
One of them is the new Aeon Mall in BSD City, South Tangerang. Until July 19, the mall is offering a bazaar of Muslim attire in their atriums. The bazaar also offers a series of make-up and hijab tutorials, fashion shows and music performances to entertain visitors.
On the opening day of the bazaar last week, a number of top Muslim fashion designers in the country showcased their latest collections in the mall.
“All the designers, selected for the show, are known for their strong and distinctive design characteristics,” said Adrian Pranata, general manager of Aeon Mall BSD City.
“Even though each collection has a different theme, they all aim to enhance Muslim women in Indonesia in welcoming Idul Fitri.”
The show also featured a number of current trends for Muslim wear this season, which will help inspire Jakarta's fashion-forward Muslim women this Idul Fitri.
Lebaran in white
White has always been a favourite colour for Idul Fitri. The color signifies a clean slate in life after fasting for a whole month in Ramadan.
In the opening day of the bazaar, senior Muslim fashion designer Itang Yunasz presented an all-white collection for his collection, themed Exotic Journey.
"[The new collection] is a conclusion of my journey across archipelago," said the 56-year-old designer.
For the Lebaran collection, Itang presented a series of long dresses, tunics and caftans for women, as well as baju koko (shirts with Nehru collars) for men, which are embellished with hand-embroideries from Tasikmalaya, West Java.
"They’re very exclusive," said Itang. "There are only three to six pieces for each design."
Some of the dresses are also adorned with feathers around the cuffs.
"Feathers are a trendy item these days," said Itang.
The designer, however, declined to reveal the prices of his first line collection.
Widely popular Muslim fashion designer, Ria Miranda, also presented a white-on-white collection for her eponymous premium line.
The collection was made of simple H-line dresses, tunic blouses and caftans adorned with Swarovski crystals around the chest.
Some of Ria's dresses are also embellished with unique intertwining vine patterns creating a fresh and youthful impression on the models.
Bilqis by senior Muslim fashion designer, Tuty Adib, also presented an all-white collection, made of silk chiffon and lace.
Some of her tunics were also embellished with silver braided cords and Swarovski crystals.
A touch of Japanese
Senior fashion designer, Itang Yunasz, presented an innovative, fresh approach to Muslim wear with the new collection of his second-line fashion label, Moshaict. For the Idul Fitri season, the designer offered a Muslim clothing collection with a unique Japanese look.
"I want to offer something different to the customers," said Itang. "Muslim clothing doesn't necessarily refer to Arabic or Middle-Eastern fashion styles only."
Moshaict's new collection is chic and dynamic and comprised of pallazzo pants, loose blouses and kimono-inspired outerwear for women in refreshing hues of pink, indigo and light orange. The men's wear consists of baju koko and baggy pants in pale indigo hues.
Exotic Japanese patterns of cranes, fans, flowers and fish scales adorned most of the items. Being loose-fitted and colourful, the collection gave a suave and relaxed impression on the models.
“They would be very light and comfortable to wear during Idul Fitri,” said the designer.
All the items of Moshaict are priced below Rp 1 million ($75).
Archipelago inspired
On the opening day of the bazaar, senior Muslim fashion designer, Jenny Tjahyawati, collaborated with Polo Ralph Lauren Indonesia and presented a collection themed Blooming Nusantara (Blooming Archipelago).
The collection consisted of tailored overcoats, slim-fit pants and tunic dresses while featuring the cultural riches of Indonesia. All the fashion items were made of beautiful Tenun Gringsing from Bali, Songket Padang from West Sumatera and Tenun Makassar from South Sulawesi.
A very chic look in this collection was a mullet overcoat in pale gold Songket Padang, paired with pencil pants and a lush green blouse.
The blouse was embellished with intricate floral embroideries by skilled traditional artisans in Bukit Tinggi, West Sumatera.
"I was inspired by the unique style of Kebaya Kutu Baru," said Jenny.
Kebaya Kutu Baru is a traditional Kebaya with a shawl collar and a flap between the lapels.
Jenny's new collection is now available at Polo Ralph Lauren's stores in large cities across Indonesia. They are priced between Rp 2 million and Rp 7 million per piece.
Itang Yunasz also presented a traditionally inspired collection for his ready-to-wear brand, Kamilla.
The new collection, themed Puspa Ragam Andalas, was inspired by Itang's recent explorations in Sumatera.
The collection was made of long dresses, adorned with printed geometric patterns, which resembled those of the handwoven textiles from Sumatra.
They are priced between Rp 300,000 and Rp 800,000.
"Culturally-inspired Muslim clothes have always been the best sellers among my collections," said Itang.
Avant garde
During the show, Muslim fashion designer Najua Yanti presented an elegant evening wear collection for her pret-a-porter label Bellabaric.
Themed Live, Life, Love, the Lebaran collection consists of A-line dresses, pallazzo pants, jodhpurs and long tunics in solid indigo, maroon and gray hues.
"I was inspired by the avant garde fashion styles of the 1960s and 1970s," said Najua.
Golden buttons and chains which embellished some of her items add a glamorous look.
Najua's items are moderately priced between Rp 275,000 and Rp 575,000.
Lebaran fashion tips
Najua also shared some fashion tips for Lebaran.
"During Idul Fitri, we usually go around town all day visiting close relatives and friends," she said. "Therefore, it is imperative that you wear not only fashionable clothes, but also comfortable ones."
"If your clothes are not comfortable, you're not going to enjoy the silaturahmi," she added. "All you want to do is rush home and change."
For all-day comfort the designer recommends clothes made of light and breathable materials, such as cotton, linen or silk.
"Don't wear clothes made of jersey, as it's rather heavy and not breathable," said the 43-year-old designer.
Chiffon is also a poor choice of material for Lebaran, as the light and semi-transparent material is not breathable.
"But you may use [chiffon] for outerwear," she said. “Their sheen and semi-transparent textures would make you look very elegant.”
Clothes made of materials that don't easily crease, such as cotton, light wool or polyester help to preserve a neat look throughout the day.
"If you can, choose the clothes, which you can transform from day to night looks quite easily," said Najua. "It'll save you a lot of time, as you don't have to go home to change."
