Five Geoparks Become National Geoparks

Jakarta. Five new geoparks have been certified as national geoparks during the National Geopark Belitung Seminar at Santika Hotel in Belitung, Bangka Belitung, on Friday (24/11).

The parks are Geopark Belitung, Geopark Raja Ampat in West Papua, Geopark Tambora in West Nusa Tenggara, Geopark Maros Pangkep in South Sulawesi and Geopark Bojonegoro in East Java.

Yunus Kusumabrata, who leads the geopark taskforce at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, said they were selected by 12 assessors.

According to the team, the five parks, with their geodiversity and biodiversity met every criteria to become national geoparks.

The geoparks will also be registered as Unesco's world heritage destinations.

"We are optimistic that Geopark Belitung will be the next Unesco Global Geopark world travel destination," Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said.

The new national geoparks are expected to support Indonesian tourism and become world-class tourism destinations.
