A 'Gedoglicious' Fashion Collection by Yogiswari Prajanti
Jakarta. Tenun Gedog is a traditional fabric, hand-woven and hand-drawn by local artisans in Tuban, East Java. The specialty of the material lies in its uneven texture, pictorial batik designs and natural dyes used in its making. Each piece is exquisite and bears a testimony of Tuban's natural riches and high level of craftsmanship among its people.
"Gedog" derives from the sound made by the weaving process. Each piece of Tunun Gedong can take up to one month to complete.
"Each Tenun Gedog is a work of art," designer Yogiswari Prajanti said. "And yet, we rarely see them nowadays."
The designer, originally from East Java, has incorporated the traditional textile in a fall/winter collection.
The collection was first showcased at the Mercedes-Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in early November. According to the designer, her collection was well received by the international audience and buyers in the event.
"A buyer from Japan came to see me one day after my show," she said. "He wanted to do a special collaboration with me."
The same collection was then brought and presented to Indonesian media in Kembang Goela, South Jakarta, last Wednesday
With the theme Gedoglicious, the collection is made of 16 Muslim wear items for women made of Tenun Gedog combined with linen, satin silk, jacquard, prada (gold-embellished batik) and Tenun Baron (handwoven fabric from Jepara, Central Java).
Yogiswari's dresses feature simple, clean-cut silhouettes highlighting the beautiful combinations of the handmade materials. Created with earthy natural dyes, the colors of her dresses are soothing to the eyes. The models of the fashion show looked charming and very feminine wearing her dresses.
However, these handmade items come with rather steep prices, beginning from Rp 4 million ($289).
They are now available at her workshop on Jalan Cendana no. 17 - 19, Komp. PP - Adhikarya, Cipinang Muara, East Jakarta and online at www.javabatik.co.id.
