German Film Festival Marks 30 Years Since Fall of Berlin Wall
Jakarta. The Goethe Institut is presenting its seventh German film festival, which will feature screenings of 12 award-winning films in six cities in Indonesia between Tuesday and Oct. 10.
German Cinema, which coincides with the 30-year commemoration of the fall of the Berlin Wall, includes three movies that provide different perspectives on life in East Germany and West Germany.
The festival opened with a screening of "Ballon" ("Balloon"), a thrilling movie, set in 1979, about the extraordinary attempts by two families to escape from East Berlin to West Germany in a homemade hot-air balloon. It won the award for Best Feature Film at the 2019 Washington D.C. International Film Festival.
Here are other interesting movies you may not want to miss:
'Adam & Evelyn'
This adaptation of a romance novel will flutter your stomach with an offbeat love story against a backdrop of a disintegrating East Germany. It tells about a relationship between Adam, a tailor, and Evelyn, a waitress, that sparks during a summer vacation in Hungary in 1989.
'Gundermann'
This biographical film is a heartwarming portrait of beloved East German folk singer and songwriter Gerhard "Gundi" Gundermann. Directed by Andreas Dresen, the movie snatched six awards at the 2019 German Film Awards, including Outstanding Feature Film, Best Direction, Best Actor and Best Screenplay.
'3 Days in Quiberon'
This black-and-white biographical film is the resounding winner of the 2018 German Film Awards. It tells about the life of Romy Schneider, a popular star in Europe in her time. The movie animated the last interview she gave a German reporter in Quiberon, France, in 1981, despite having had a bitter experience with the press before.
'Das Ende der Wahrheit'
Translated to "Blame Game," the drama/thriller focuses on Martin, a Middle East expert, who works for the German intelligence agency. The story starts to unfold as he investigates two linked terrorist attacks.
Other award-winning movies that will be screened are "Mountain Miracle," "25 km/h," "Fritz Lang," "Atlas," "All About Me," and two topical documentaries, "Exit-Leaving Extremism Behind" and "The Cleaners."
Screenings will be at Goethehaus and Grand Indonesia in Jakarta, Plaza Renon in Denpasar, Bali, Paris Van Java in Bandung, West Java, Panakkukang Square in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Jwalk Mall in Yogyakarta, and Marvell City in Surabaya, East Java.
