Giant French Puppets to Hit Parade at Bali Art Festival
Jakarta. France's Les Grandes Personnes or "giant puppets" will participate in a parade at Bali Art Festival this weekend, which takes place in conjunction with the closing of the French Spring Festival (Festival Printemps Francais) 2016.
These dramatic puppets are built up to four meters high, which is a similar height to ondel-ondel in Jakarta and ogoh-ogoh in Bali. They have participated in numerous festivals around the world, and helped to establish puppet theaters in Chile, South Africa and Mozambique.
Members of Les Grandes Personnes are also set to meet Balinese artists Dalang I Made Sidia from Paripurna Studio, who is famous for their contemporary leather puppet shows, and Wayang Candra from Gajah Sesetan Bali Studio, an acclaimed maker of ogoh-ogoh.
Les Grandes Personnes is a street theater which transcends the gap between craftsmanship, visual and performing arts. The theater was established in 1998 in Aubervilliers, Paris, and usually perform Shakespearean drama. More than 30 artists with various backgrounds are involved in every performance; visual artists, painters, circus players, puppeteers, dancers, musicians and fashion designers.
Bali Art Festival runs at Taman Budaya Art Center in Denpasar until July 9.
