Jakarta. "Gundala," the first film adaptation of the eponymous homegrown superhero, whose costume and headgear more than resemble The Flash, is now on track to book one million viewers at the box office by the end of this week.

The film, which will also have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival later this month, has already attracted 822,000 viewers since it premiered last Thursday on 440 screens across Indonesia, according to the film's official social media account.

"Thank you, patriots of this country!" Gundala's official Twitter account wrote.

"This country needs a patriot" is the official tagline of the film.

Director Joko Anwar said a version of the film with Indonesian subtitles made for the hearing impaired will also be screened in 21 cinemas across Indonesia starting on Tuesday.

Joko's top-grossing movie was "Pengabdi Setan" ("Satan’s Slaves"), a horror movie remake that attracted 4.2 million viewers in 2017.

Indonesia's top-grossing movie of all time is still the 2016 comedy remake "Warkop DKI Reborn: Jangkrik Boss! Part 1," which attracted 6.8 million viewers.

Film critic Yan Wijaya said he believed Gundala could reach as many as two million viewers in two weeks as long as they get enough people to see it on weekdays.

The number of viewers for Gundala peaked at 512,000 on Saturday and hovered above 174,000 on weekdays so far, according to data from Bicara Box Office, a local blog that tracks the number of movie tickets sold in the country.

Another challenge for Gundala at the box office in the next few days will be to weather the storm from the much-awaited Hollywood blockbuster horror franchise, "IT: Chapter Two," which will screen on Sept. 4.
