Independence Day Carnival in Bandung
Jakarta. The Independence Day celebrations will end next week with a carnival in Bandung, West Java, on Aug. 26.
On Thursday (17/08) Indonesia observed the 72nd anniversary of the proclamation of independence.
The festival,"Nyalakan Api Semangat Kerja Bersama" ("Sparking the Spirit of Working Together"), will be preceded by a shadow puppet show at the city hall on Saturday, the "Bandung Run" race and a culinary tour on Sunday.
"The carnival is the closing ceremony of the Independence Day celebrations," State Secretary Pratikno said.
The carnival parade from Simpang Lima will pass by the Savoy Homann hotel and the Merdeka building to finish at the town square. It will be led by a military orchestra and cavalry, followed by the presidential limousines and vintage cars of Indonesia's first President Sukarno.
Children's groups, veterans members of artistic communities, martial artists, traditional arts performers and many others will take part in the parade.
A big stage for concerts will be raised at the Juang Monument.
The carnival is an annual event organized by the Presidential Palace in Jakarta. Since 2015, each year a different city hosts the post-Independence Day celebrations. Last year the festival was held at Lake Toba in North Sumatra, and a year earlier in Pontianak, West Kalimantan.
"That's for the regions to share the excitement," Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said.
President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and first lady Iriana Widodo will open the carnival.
The event is going to be covered by nine national and international TV stations.
