Indonesia to Be Guest of Honor at Europalia Arts Festival

Jakarta. Works of Indonesian artists will be presented at the biannual Europalia Arts Festival held in several European countries for four months, this year starting in October.

The countries include the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Poland, France and Austria, which will see hundreds of cultural events, dance and theater shows, music performances, literature events, screenings and exhibitions.

In Brussels, the comic capital of the world, an exhibition of Indonesian comic books will be held.

Ministry of Education and Culture director general for culture Hilmar Farid said Europalia is a great opportunity to present the diversity of Indonesian contemporary and traditional art.

"We are going to display tons of artifacts and bring 400 people, who will be there for 104 days. It is indeed a huge art mission," Hilmar said.

Indonesia is the fourth Asian country, after Japan, China and India, and the first in Southeast Asia to be the guest of honor of the festival, which was established in 1969.

The festival if covered by the world's most prominent TV channels, including the BBC and Bloomberg.
