Indonesian Ska Group Shaggydog to Perform at SXSW Music Fest

FEBRUARY 11, 2016

Jakarta. Indonesian ska and reggae group Shaggydog is set to perform at the 2016 SXSW, or South by Southwest, Music Festival, which will take place in Austin, Texas, on March 15-20.

"Fans have been raising their glasses and kicking up heels to the infectious sounds of Shaggydog for well over a decade," the festival organizers wrote on its website. "With a style that blends a myriad of genres, including dancehall, reggae, ska, alternative pop and swing, their tunes are guaranteed to get the dance floor thumping."

Calling their music "Doggy Stylee," the six-member group was formed in 1997 in Sayidan, a riverside neighborhood in the middle of Yogyakarta. Their first self-titled album was released in 1999, followed by "Bersama" ("Together") in 2001. Most recently, the group launched their fifth album, "Bersinar" ("Shining") in 2009.

Speaking to Rolling Stone Indonesia, Shaggydog vocalist Heru said they were first offered the SXSW gig in early 2015.

"Our record label and international agent Doggyhouse Records helped us to send our materials like video, songs and profile to SXSW at the time," he said, "and the organizers offered us an opportunity to perform there."

Heru added that Shaggydog will perform a number of songs from their upcoming album at the festival.

"Some songs from our new album are written in English," he said.

Since their inception, Shaggydog's music has gained international following, leading them to various tours such as an 11-city concert tour in the Netherlands in 2006. They also performed in the Darwin Festival in Australia in 2009.
