Jakarta. The Russian Embassy will present a concert and exhibition in Jakarta this month to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between its country and Indonesia.
The event, set to feature notable Russian artists, will follow Indonesia's successful hosting of a cultural festival in Moscow in August.
"In conjunction with our anniversary [of diplomatic relations] on Sept. 11, our cultural center will hold a concert by Russian guitarist Dmitry Maloletov and an exhibition of the work of Russian photographer Sergey Kovalchuk," Ambassador Lyudmila Georgievna Vorobieva said on Wednesday.
Photographs Kovalchuk had taken in various parts of the archipelago, published in his book "Indonesia. The Territory of Ancient Traditions," will be presented in the exhibition. His works were previously on display in his homeland.
The embassy has also held a logo and essay competition on social media.
"We organized a contest on social media for Indonesians to create a logo for our 70th anniversary; also an essay competition on Indonesia and Russia," Vorobieva said.
The winners have already been selected and their prizes will be presented on Sept. 17. Rafly Aditya Nurdhani and Monica Jesusia have won the essay competition, while Udhy Mozal created the winning logo. They won free return trips to Moscow, and the runners-up various other exciting prizes. A complete list of the winners is available on the embassy's website.
Indonesia and Russia established diplomatic relations in 1950, when it was still the Soviet Union. It was one of only a handful of countries to have recognized Indonesia's independence in 1945.
Trade between the two countries amounted to $2.52 billion in 2017. In a meeting with President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo in November last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his desire to double this amount by 2020.
