Jakarta Fashion Week Celebrates 10th Anniversary With 'Bhinneka dan Berkarya'

OCTOBER 05, 2017

Jakarta. Jakarta Fashion Week, one of Indonesia's most eagerly awaited fashion events, will take place at Senayan City shopping mall in South Jakarta on Oct. 21-27.

The inaugural event, which took place at Pacific Place shopping mall in South Jakarta in August 2008, showcased the collections of 47 renowned and up-and-coming Indonesian designers.

For the first time ever, this year's event will  have a specific theme: "Bhinneka dan Berkarya" ("Working and Creating in Diversity").

"Jakarta Fashion Week is like a mini-Indonesia," JFW director Lenny Tedja said during a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday (28/09). "The event pulls together many different individuals, different fashion genres, different styles and materials to work together and present Indonesian fashion."

Diversity is also pictured in this year's list of participating designers. The event will showcase the collections of 175 local designers from various parts of Indonesia, in addition to designers from Australia, Britain, India, Japan, South Korea and Sweden.

"These international designers can share their knowledge and experience with our designers and expand their horizons," Lenny said.

There will also be several design competitions and talk shows during the seven-day event.

"We're proud to host JFW for five years now," said Jaclyn Halim, general manager of marketing at Senayan City. "The event is an important showcase for Indonesian designers. It has also grown bigger and better each year."

As usual, there will be three areas in the shopping mall dedicated to the fashion event. The main area, the JFW Fashion Tent, will be on Jalan TPH, just outside the mall. The main atrium will host the JFW Fashion Atrium, which will feature some of the fashion shows, talk shows and product launches. The Hall on the mall's eighth floor will be converted into the JFW Fashionlink Market, where visitors will be able to purchase some of the designers' ready-to-wear collections.

The event will open with a parade of participating designers and their muses in the Fashion Tent on the morning of Oct. 21.

On the same day, the Australian Embassy will present a show featuring Australian designer Chris Ran Lin, together with Indonesian labels "Jenahara" and "Monday to Sunday," also in the Fashion Tent.

The Fashion Design Council of India will present a show featuring Indian designer Nitin Bal Chauhan and Indonesian designer Novita Yunus in the Fashion Tent on the afternoon of the same day.

UBS Gold will present a fashion show with the theme "Urban Geometric," featuring Indonesian ready-to-wear labels "Bateeq," "Byvelvet" and "Paulina Katarina," in the Fashion Tent on Oct. 24.

"In the show, we'll also introduce our newest jewelry collection that uses black gold," UBS Gold creative director Erwin Suganda said.

Epson Indonesia will present a show featuring Indonesian ready-to-wear brands "Alex[A]lexa," "Jii by Gloria Agatha," "Danjyo Hiyoji" and "Kami Idea" in the Fashion Tent on Oct. 25.

"All the prints used in the show are created by using our special textile printing technology," said Lina Mariani, a representative of Epson Indonesia.

Another interesting highlight during the event will be a fashion show by Senayan City in the Fashion Tent on Oct. 26, featuring some of the rising names in the Indonesian fashion industry, such as Kiata Kwanda, Lulu Lutfi Labibi and Paulina Katarina.

The event will culminate on the evening of Oct. 27 with the show "Dewi Fashion Knights," which will feature some of the most prominent fashion labels in Indonesia this year, such as "Major Minor," "Toton" and "Peggy Hartanto."

Around 36,000 fashion lovers are expected to attend this year's event.
