Javanese Gathering in Sumatra Breaks MURI Record
Jakarta. The ninth Paguyuban Among Wargo Jowo, or Punggowo, on Sunday (27/08) broke the Indonesian Museum of Records, or MURI, record for the largest number of participants and art performances in one exhibition.
Punggowo is a gathering of more than 100 Javanese communities in Riau Islands.
"With its success in breaking the record, the event becomes a national event to be held annually with the support from the Ministry of Tourism," Punggowo leader Soerya Respationo said in a statement.
More than 150,000 guests attended the gathering.
There were 68 art groups, which performed traditional Javanese and Sumatran dances such as kuda kepang, reog, rontek, jathilan, topeng ireng, tayub, kerawitan and barongsai.
The event's guest stars were celebrated singer Didi Kempot and dangdut singer Sodiq Monata.
Last year, the event attracted 137,000 visitors.
