Jakarta. The Katamama boutique hotel in Seminyak, Bali, is the only Indonesian hotel on the Hot List 2017, the annual pick of best new hotels around the world by award-winning Conde Nast Traveler magazine.

This year marks the 21st edition of the Hot List, which selected 75 of 675 contenders from Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Australia and the Pacific, Caribbean and Mexico, Central and South America, Europe and the United States.

Editor Pilar Guzman said in statement on Wednesday (19/04) that the Hot List is "a predictor of what properties will stand the test of time and make history."

Potato Head Family chief executive Ronald Akili said that the group created Katamama to showcase a balance between tradition and modernity. The hotel's name in Indonesian means "Mama says."

"Katamama, which means 'Mama says' in our native language, is a reference to the wisdom handed down from generation to generation; our Balinese boutique hotel indeed has many stories to tell," he said.

Katamama is a 58-suite hotel located just across Potato Head Beach Club, the famous pool club on the edge of the Petitenget Beach. It was designed by Indonesian architect Andra Matin, whose portfolio includes Komunitas Salihara and Gedung Dua8 in Jakarta.

The hotel commissions Indonesian art and craft works for display in its rooms and for sale in its shop.

Each of the hotel rooms is furnished with vintage pieces, handmade objects and stunning photographs by prominent local artists.
