Jakarta. The fourth Keerom Cultural Festival will be held at the Swakarsa football field in Asyaman village in Keerom, Papua, on Aug. 2-4, showing off the best of Papua's traditional culture.
"If you want to see the natural beauty of Papua and its unique culture, please come to Keerom. We're also expecting visitors from our neighbor, Papua New Guinea," the Tourism Ministry's marketing development deputy Esthy Astuti said in a statement on Sunday (30/7).
This year’s Keerom festival carries a long title: "A Dignified Nation Is a Cultured Nation: the Wonders of Indonesia and Keerom." The goal of the festival, according to the ministry, is to promote the town and kickstart its creative economy.
Artists from Keerom and all around Papua welcome the festival as a rare event to show their wares.
"There are 19 tribes in Keerom. The region has a very rich culture that deserves exposure in this large-scale art event," Esthy said.
The event will feature traditional dances that have been modified to represent the culture of each village in Keerom, and also performances by dancers from Papua New Guinea.
Papuan reggae singer Edo Kodolongit will also perform a set at the festival.
Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said the festival meets the "3A requirements" — Attractions, Accessibility and Amenities — for a tourism festival and should attract more local and international visitors to Keerom in the future.
