Jakarta. The Ministry of Transportation said in a statement on Thursday (19/10) that it will expand the runway of Marinda Airport in Raja Ampat, West Papua, to accommodate more travelers.

The plan comes after a meeting between Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi and West Papua Governor Dominggus Mandacan two weeks ago.

The airport will have its runway extended to 2,500 meters from 1,200 meters currently, the statement said.

Former transportation minister E.E. Mangindaan inaugurated Marinda Airport in 2012. The airport has an 80-square-meter apron and a 120-square-meter terminal.

It is currently served with flights by Susi Air and Wings Air.

Sriwijaya Air and NAM Air will open new flight routes to Raja Ampat from Jakarta, Surabaya (East Java), Yogyakarta, Semarang (Central Java) and Makassar (South Sulawesi) on Oct. 21.
