Jakarta. Speaking during a cabinet meeting on the national strategic projects, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo stressed on Wednesday (14/06) the importance of Bali in the tourism sector.
"With its culture and creativity, Bali gives a positive image of Indonesia abroad; foreign tourists are even more aware of the island than of the whole country," Jokowi said.
In the meeting, which saw in attendance Tourism Minister Arief Yahya and Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika, Jokowi called on strengthening Bali's culture and tradition.
"The growth in this sector should be preserved to guarantee the welfare of the Balinese," the president said.
Arief added that as Bali has no natural resources, like oil and gas, coal and crude palm oil, its economy solely depends on tourism and creative economy.
Jokowi's administration prioritizes tourism and aims to equally distribute across the country the economic benefits it generates by creating the so-called "Ten New Balis."
The Ten New Balis — the government's 10 priority tourism destinations — are Morotai, Tanjung Kelayang, Tanjung Lesung, Borobudur, Lake Toba, the Thousand Islands, Mt. Bromo, Mt. Semeru, Mandalika and Wakatobi.
