Jakarta. The 2017 Regional Investment Forum, held in Padang, West Sumatra, on Oct. 15-17, highlighted investment opportunities in the Indonesian tourism sector to support the government’s efforts in developing the sector.
The speakers at the forum were Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, West Sumatra Governor Irwan Prayitno and Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) chairman Thomas Lembong.
The destinations showcased at the forum included Mandeh beach and Gunung Padang in West Sumatra, Lake Toba in North Sumatra, Tanjung Kelayang in Bangka Belitung and Borobudur Temple in Central Java.
In his speech, Irwan said the event is a huge opportunity to present and inform the investors about the investment opportunities in West Sumatra, especially in tourism sector.
“Padang is ready for investors. We are ready to facilitate and ensure safety for investors as we understand that safety is one of important factors in investment,” Irwan said.
Thomas in his speech said Indonesia must increase its infrastructure development, connectivity support and economy integration zone to attract more tourism investment.
Minister Arief encouraged regional governments in Indonesia to immediately choose tourism as their main sector as President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has announced that in 2018 tourism is listed as the second leading sector, after agriculture.
“The president has been very committed in developing tourism, thus every ministry, agencies and related parties must support as well,” Arief said.
The tourism growth rate in Indonesia is at 25 percent, which is four times the regional growth and five times higher than other Southeast Asia countries, such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.
