We See You Jakarta: The xx X Mouly Surya
Jakarta. British electro pop band The xx released a short film titled "We See You Jakarta" directed by Indonesian Mouly Surya – who made last year's critically-acclaimed satay western "Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts" – on Tuesday (24/07).
According to a statement released on Wednesday, the film is a token of love from The xx for its Indonesian fans and is available on the band's YouTube channel.
As of now, the video – featuring two of Jakarta's iconic ondel-ondel dolls walking around the city – has gained over 16,000 views.
The xx comprised Romy Madly Croft (guitar, vocals), Oliver Sim (bass guitar, vocals) and Jamie Smith (beats, MPC, producer).
The band kicked off the Asian leg of their "I See You" world tour at JI Expo Kemayoran in Jakarta in January this year.
The band members said on social media they saw Mouly’s films before they began their world tour, and personally invited her to shoot the short film while they were in Jakarta.
Mouly's film shows two fans from Jakarta, Herarld Reynaldo and Xandega Tahajuansya, covering their favorite The xx song "On Hold" (from the band's third album "I See You," released early last year), at a bar in Kemang.
There are also typical scenes of Jakarta – traffic gridlock, a Kopaja bus, a boy waiting for his Go-Jek ride, and the colorful but creepy ondel-ondel dolls.
According to the band, the film is meant to celebrate the closeness between the band and its Indonesian fans.
"It was a fun experience combining one of my favorite songs with the shots I captured of Jakarta. It's two artists talking to each other in their own artistic language," Mouly said.
We See You Jakarta is part of a series. "We See You Berlin" by German director Sylvie Webber was released in November.
