Senayan City Celebrates a Decade of Pure Decadence in Fashion Nation Tenth Edition
Jakarta. The number 10 is thought to be special and often used to signify perfection or excellence.
Senayan City, the upscale mall in South Jakarta, strives to achieve this excellence in its 10th anniversary this year. Its signature fashion event "Fashion Nation," held concurrently with the mall's anniversary, promises to be bigger, better and even more opulent this year.
The event, themed "Fashion Nation Tenth Edition: A Decade of Pure Decadence," opened last night (14/04) in the mall's main atrium.
"This year, Senayan City marks its iconic tenth year," said of Senayan City chief executive, Veri Y. Setiady, in his opening speech. "It's been a long journey. There have been a lot of inspirations, transformations and metamorphosis (in the mall) along the way. We invite all the guests to witness [the transformation of] Senayan City in the next 10 years."
The fashion event, held annually since the mall's opening, has been consistently showcasing the best young talents from Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
To mark the mall's 10th anniversary this year, its main atrium has been transformed to resemble a command center of a spaceship. A huge white X-shape platform dissects its middle, dividing the atrium into four seating sections. Massive golden arches, crisscrossing above the platform, creates an otherworldly impression in the atrium.
Hundreds of the country's rich and famous, dressed in glittering gold in compliance with the dress code, attended the event's opening last night.
For the opening night, 10 Indonesian designers, who had presented their collections in the same event in the previous years, featured one special look in the a parade.
Among them are Ari Seputra, Barli Asmara, Denny Wirawan, Didi Budiardjo, Eddy Betty, Mel Ahyar, Priyo Oktaviano, Sapto Djojokartiko, Tri Handoko and accessories designer, Rinaldy A. Yunardi.
Designer Tri Handoko opened the parade by presenting a chic red suit, made of kebaya-inspired jacket and capri pants. Origami-style pleats adorned the structured jacket. A kris (Javanese dagger), neatly tucked at the model's waist, created a beautiful combined look between modern and traditional in the suit.
In the same parade, designer Denny Wirawan presented an elegant long dress, made entirely of handwoven fabrics in deep crimson hue from East Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara. A stag's horn headpiece by Rinaldy A. Yunardi, worn by the model, blended nicely with the dress and highlighted the bold tribal patterns on its fabric.
After the parade of 10 designers, Indonesian couture designer Priyo Oktaviano presented his spring/summer 2016 collection, themed "Potpourri." His flesh-tone dresses, reminiscent of classic French styles in the early 19th century, are exquisite. Many of them are adorned with delicate ruffles and fringes that fluttered beautifully as the models sashayed along the catwalk.
In contrast, the collection of Singaporean young designer Frederick Lee, presented soon afterwards, are more theatrical and playful. Themed "A Wild Botanica Dream," the collection featured colorful dresses in bizarre silhouettes. Despite the dresses' unorthodox shapes, fine craftsmanship is apparent in each of Lee's creations.
Fashion Nation Tenth Edition will last until next Saturday, April 23. During the event, there will be three or four fashion shows in the mall's main atrium each day.
