Stars of 'My Kitchen Rules' Take Inspiration from Indonesian Traditional Cooking
Jakarta. Stars of Australian cooking show "My Kitchen Rules" Tasia and Gracia Seger made it to the top 13 in the show by taking inspiration from their grandmother’s traditional Indonesian cooking.
The Indonesian siblings are known for their generous use of Asian spices, such as chili, garlic, onion and shallots in the show. Often dubbed the Spice Sisters, both said they adopted grandmother's cooking style they grew up with. Speaking at a break fasting feast at Keraton hotel's Bengawan restaurant in Jakarta on Monday, the dynamic duo said even though they often bicker in the kitchen, it’s all in good fun as they share their childhood together.
Gracia remarked that the plethora of spices incorporated into Indonesian food makes it unique and delicious. In Australia, the origin of the show, Indonesian cuisine is slowly being introduced through Balinese cuisine.
“At the time, the trend is very strong on the Thai cuisine," she said.
However, the two sisters also said that they are not constrained by Asian food only. During the top 13 round in which contestants had to cook for a family buffet, the sisters noticeably impressed judges with their Moroccan lamb stew with saffron rice, proving they have the versatility to pull off Mediterranean cuisines as well.
"My Kitchen Rules" is currently on the seventh season and plays on Mondays to Wednesdays at 8.25 p.m. Jakarta time.
NBC Universal rep, Donovan Mohlman was also in attendance in the press event with Tasia and Gracia, gave a sneak peek of new shows in the channel, such as E! News’ "All Access Indonesia" hosted by Maria and Elizabeth Rahajeng, "Mariah’s World" and "Chicago PD."
Fan favorites such as "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" will be returning along with the Kardashian family’s new show featuring the lives of Rob Kardashian and his new fiancée, Blac Chyna.
