Tourism Minister Urges Gov't to Go Digital

NOVEMBER 03, 2017

Jakarta. Tourism Minister Arief Yahya talked about the importance of a digital platform in tourism during a speech at Indonesian Tourism Outlook 2018 in Jakarta on Wednesday (01/11).

The meeting was initiated by the Indonesian Forum of Tourism Journalists. It analyzed opportunities in the tourism sector and gathered inputs aimed at achieving the ministry's target of 20 million foreign tourist arrivals annually by 2019.

The event was attended by Indonesian economist Faisal Basri, World Travel and Tourism Council senior vice president Helen Marano and TripAdvisor's head of destination marketing for Asia Pacific, Sarah Mathews.

"If Indonesia uses a digital approach, the country can immediately compete with other tourist destinations in other countries," Arief said.

He said the growing number of foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia is also due to the sector going digital on social media, big data and e-commerce.

Arief suggested that the government makes a joint digital platform to connect tourism stakeholders and the public.
