Jakarta. The Ministry of Tourism is scheduled to hold the third quarter of 2017 Tourism National Coordination Meeting at the Bidakara Hotel in Jakarta on Tuesday (26/09) and Wednesday.
The meeting will plan the Calendar of Events 2018 in order to achieve next year’s target of 17 million foreign tourists and 270 million domestic tourists.
“The synergy for Wonderful Indonesia Calendar of Events 2018 is very important […] thus every region is pushed to create international events that will be included in the calendar,” Arief said in a statement.
The keynote speakers include Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, Yogyakarta Governor Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, North Sulawesi Governor Olly Dondokambey, Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Pandjaitan and Coordinating Human Development and Cultural Affairs Minister Puan Maharani.
The event will also be attended by 500 participants ranging from government agencies, regional administrations, academics, businesspeople, local community and media representatives.
Arief said the meeting will discuss incentives needed for each region, a standard indicator to have international scale and methods to create a sustainable event — which includes elements pre event, event and post event.
A sustainable event needs financial support from sponsors, thus it is difficult to maintain one if the event makes only little profit, “no matter how good the event is,” he added.
Indonesia currently has a number of sustainable events including Jakarta Fashion Week, Jakarta International Java Jazz, Jakarta Culinary Festival, Tour de Singkarak (West Sumatra) and Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (East Java).
Next year, Indonesia will be the host of Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang and IMF-World Bank Annual Meeting in Bali, which will boost tourist visits in achieving the government’s target, Arief said.
