Jakarta. Indonesia's Tourism Ministry held the MICE-INAMICE National Convention 2017 at Crown Plaza Hotel in Jakarta on Wednesday (26/04) as part of its efforts to boost the "MICE" — meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibition — industry in Indonesia.

The event was attended by representatives from polytechnics and universities across Indonesia that offer MICE study programs.

"The government needs to connect with [the] Pentahelix [organization] to approach businesspeople, academics, local communities and media representatives and keep Indonesia's MICE industry competitive in the Asean community," Wisnu Sulaeman, chairman of the MICE-INAMICE National Convention, said in a statement on Saturday.

He said the convention was held to help encourage more foreign tourists to come to Indonesia through leisure tours as well as MICE business tours.

"The leisure and business tourism industry depends on quality human resources who can meet visitors' needs and expectations," Wisnu added.

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) to improve competitiveness, data collection and development at Indonesian MICE destinations was also signed during the convention.

"The MoU is the beginning of a project to turn Joglosemar [Jogjakarta-Solo-Semarang in Central Java] into a world-standard, integrated MICE city," Hendri Karnoza, assistant deputy of business and government at the Tourism Ministry, said.

The convention also included the INAMICE Award 2017 event that gives out awards to outstanding MICE destinations across the country.
