Jakarta. The Ministry of Tourism undertook a sales mission in Singapore to draw Singaporean tourists to Belitung Island in Bangka Belitung by promoting available direct flights from the nation-state to Tanjung Pandan.

The mission has been active since Nov. 1 at the Marina Mandarin Hotel.

Tourism Ministry representative Judi Rifajantoro said that the sales mission was attended by 33 travel agents and four hotels.

"We want to create Belitung as one of the favorite destinations for foreign tourists, so the destination will be one of the '10 new Balis,'" Judi said on Thursday (02/11), referring to the ministry's initiative of developing tourist destinations around the country to compete with Bali.

According to Judi, many Singaporean tour companies were already interested in the island because of the emotional bond between ancestors who hail from Belitung.

Later, chartered flights with Sriwijaya Air will fly back and forth from H. A. S. Hanandjoeddin International Airport in Belitung to Changi Airport in Singapore three times a week from Dec. 15 to Jan. 5.

"This is a market test. If the demand increases, more flights will be added. It will be a challenge for related parties, especially for infrastructure," said Judi.
