University in North Maluku Holds Marine Tourism Seminar
Jakarta. The faculty of fisheries and marine science of Khairun University in Ternate, North Maluku, held "Maritime and Utilization of Small Islands Resources" seminar, on Oct. 24-25, to support the government's program of improving the province's tourism.
The seminar was attended by 500 participants — government officials, non profit organizations and university students.
"The seminar aims to create a clear management concept for the utilization of small islands to help the local economy," head of the seminar’s organizing committee Imran Taeran said in a statement.
The seminar was opened by the university's rector Husen Alting. The keynote speech was delivered by Professor Rokhmin Dahuri who presented his paper "Roadmap of Marine Development to Improve Competitiveness, Economic Growth Towards Indonesia as World's Maritime Axis."
Second session featured representatives from the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Safri Burhanudin and Zulfikar Mochtar, who spoke about the development of marine tourism, national salt industry, waste problem, renewable energy and latest technological innovations.
Third session was led by Tazbir and Ari Surhendro of the Ministry of Tourism, who talked about the university's role in developing small islands.
Esthy Reko Astuti, tourism development deputy at the Ministry of Tourism, expressed hope that the event will help improve Maluku's tourism potential.
