West Papua to Host Raja Ampat Marine Festival
Jakarta. West Papua is set to hold the Raja Ampat Marine Festival on Waigeo Island on Oct. 18-21.
"The festival aims to introduce the potential of marine tourism and the culture of the people of Raja Ampat," district head Abdul Faris Umlati said in a statement.
The festival will feature a boat decorating competition, swimming competition, running event, seafood cooking competition, volleyball matches and art and cultural performances by the local residents.
Raja Ampat will also host Wonders of Misool on Nov. 8-10, the Raja Trophy Football Tournament on Nov. 23-30 and New Year's Festival on Dec. 30-31.
Raja Ampat, located at the center of the so-called Coral Triangle, is home to five turtle species, wobbegong and kalabia walking sharks, 15 endemic fish species, 699 types of clams, 1,427 coral reef fish species and 553 types of hard corals.
The district is a three-hour speedboat ride from Sorong, the capital of West Papua Province.
