Jakarta. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo highlighted the potential in marine resources for Indonesia's prosperity in a speech during Mappanretasi, a traditional sea celebration in Tanah Bumbu, South Kalimantan, on Sunday (07/05).

Jokowi said, as quoted in a statement released by the Cabinet Secretariat, that celebrations like Mappanretasi remind us that our ancestors had lived in harmony with the ocean and we should not turn our backs to it, as it is a rich natural and national resource.

"This celebration is a proof that Indonesia is a maritime nation," Jokowi said.

Mappanretasi is a Bugis festival, held to express gratitude for the generosity of the sea.

"Indonesia's marine resources can be worth billions of dollars each year if we manage them well," Jokowi said.

The president added that marine resources are of key importance to increase the nation's prosperity and reduce economic inequality.
