Unified Korean Team Wins First Gold at 2018 Asian Games
Jakarta. The unified Korean contingent won a historic first gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games when its canoeing team finished first in the women's 500-meter dragon boat race in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Sunday (26/08).
The team won with a time of 2 minutes 24.788 seconds, followed by China with 2 minutes 25.092 seconds, and Thailand with 2 minutes 26.904 seconds.
The previously also won bronze in the 200-meter dragon boat race on Saturday. China won the event, which saw Indonesia take silver.
The two Koreas marched together under a unification flag – the map of the Korean Peninsula in blue on a white background – during the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Jakarta on Aug. 18.
The two countries are represented by 58 athletes competing in women's basketball, rowing and canoeing during this year's event.
This is the second time this year the two countries compete together as one team, after also doing so during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea in February.
The Korean women's basketball team meanwhile defeated Thailand 106-63 in the quarterfinals at the Gelora Bung Karno Basketball Hall in Jakarta on Sunday. It will face Taiwan next, in the semifinals.
